Facebook Pages – Did The Bomb Drop On You?

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

Facebook Pages - Did The Bomb Drop?A few days after the impending Armageddon when every Facebook page would apparently disappear forever, vapourized as if they were never there in the first place, guess what happened?

The answer is ‘nothing whatsoever’ happened for most Facebook page owners, with the overwhelming majority of fanpages every bit as ‘live’ and visible as they ever were.

So, what was it all about and why did most notice no changes?

Allow me to explain.

There are two different ways of adding content to your Facebook page.

On the one hand, you have the mass of users who build a ‘standard’ page using only the tools and resources that Facebook makes available through their account. For these good folks, nothing changed at all and I dare say that most were entirely unaware that changes were afoot in the first place!

On the flipside however, there are thousands of marketers who are keen to take fanpage usage to the next level by using ‘custom’ page designs. This cannot be done from inside the Facebook system, but the page can be constructed and hosted elsewhere before being ‘iFramed’ into or onto Facebook.

Think of an iFrame as a framed page that overlays the page over which it appears and you’ve got the basic concept.

An iFrame must be pulled in from outside – most commonly from a hosted WordPress blog – and Facebook saw this as a potential security issue. Hence, if you use a custom page and an iFrame, it can only be pulled in from a secure hosting account from October 1st.

Most page owners are happy with the tools and resources offered by Facebook, so this change did not touch them at all.

So there you have it, that’s what happened or more accurately, didn’t happen for the vast majority!

Still, I’m sure that your life is eminently richer for the experience of being part of such an important global non-event, eh?

UPDATED – See Bottom Of This Post For More Information:

This is insane but absolutely genuine. But it also lasts for just a few more days, so you have to be very quick.

One of my favorite software developers is Brad Callen. He’s the guy behind what I still consider to be the best keyword software on the market (Keyword Elite) and a brilliant SEO report – and Brad is a master of SEO – called SEO Mindset.

I’d definitely recommend that you take a look at both the software and the book – both are truly outstanding – but make absolutely certain that you take action on what you are going to read on this page no matter what.

Brad has just launched a new service called SEO Link Vine, which as the name suggests is a new link networking system/tool. But here’s the crazy thing (or several actually)…

First, the system is free.

Second, it automatically adds content to your blog and it ‘uniquefies’ the content that it is adding as it does so. So, if building a site on autopilot sounds like a good idea (no more spending boring hours writing content for your site), this tool is for you (and remember, it’s free).

Next, it’s an excellent niche research tool and because of the way it is building your site, it’ll send you a ton of free targeted traffic as well.

So, it sounds good so far, right?

Well, here’s the really crazy thing.

For the next few days, until April 9th, Brad is actually giving away cash…really!!

For every site you add to the system – that is, your own sites, chunks of virtual real estate that you own – Brad’s company Bryxen are going to add $1 to your PayPal account! If you have 50 sites, that’s $50 for adding them all to the system, 100 sites is worth $100 and so on…

It sounds insane but it actually makes sense when you think about it. A link network is only strong if there are lots of sites in it and what better way of making sure you help the network grow than paying you to do so?

But like I say, this is only open for a few days, so you’d better get a move on if you want to take advantage of this insanity generosity.

Here’s the link again – SEO Link Vine. Do it now…

STOP-PRESS: A couple of people have asked for proof that there really is money being given away here – after all, it sounds nuts, right? Here’s the screenshot:

SEOVine

Okay, let me explain again what this does. It builds your blogs and sites for you, period.

It collects content, makes it unique (you can reject anything that is not unique enough for you) and then adds it to your site 2,3,4, however many times a day you like. You also have the ability to manually review content before it is added so anything you don’t like, you don’t post.

Now, this is not primarily about finding other people to join the system. It’s about adding your own sites so that they are automatically updated, with the degree of automation being entirely your choice and getting paid to do so.

But here’s the thing,

Until this Friday, you will get $1 in your PayPal account for every site added by anyone you add to the ssytem too (look at the bottom of the screenshot).

So, it you have a list, mail it out today and you could add $100′s to PayPal literally overnight by giving away something that is extremely useful and totally free.

Build one way links from .edu sites, courtesy of Google

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Further to the last post where I explained how Yahoo! can help you find both .edu and .gov sites that will link to you, try this one with Google. Run a standard search using variations of this string as your search parameters (make sure the spacing is correct):-

site:.edu inurl:blog “post a comment” -”you must be logged in” -”comment posting closed” -”comment closed” “<your keyword term>”

Do this and Google returns all of the .edu university and college blogs to which you can submit your comments to generate a link. It is probably a good idea to ping his/her blog after your comment is added to the post to make certain it gets picked up too.

Of course, you must ensure that the links are followable before posting a helpful and thoughtful comment. Install either the Google toolbar or the excellent (and free) Search Status Firefox add-on to simplify this latter task.

Build one way links with .edu and .gov sites the easy way…

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Almost every site that you see nowadays is talking about links and especially about how to generate them.  But, did you know that some links seem to have more value attached to them than others?

More specifically, were you aware that links from .edu and .gov site seem to have more importance attached to them than links from ‘ordinary’ .com, .net and .org sites.

As with most things to do with Google, then only people who really know how true this notion s are the Google folks themselves, but there is certainly a logic to the idea.

After all, it is possible to manipulate links from ordinary domain names, but far harder to do so with links from educational and government establishments, and you would naturally assume that those links should carry more weight too.

But, how do you find sites like these, .edu and .gov domain sites that are willing to link to sites in your niche?  Here’s how…
Run a standard Yahoo! search using your main niche keyword.

This will produce the top ten sites in your niche, so you then take the first domain name and type it into Yahoo! in exactly this format:

‘linkdomain:competingsite.com inurl:.edu’

And, hey presto, you’ll have a list of .edu sites that are carrying links to your competitor.

Now all you need to do is follow up and request a link for your own site from the same .edu establishment. Alternatively, check the site to see whether you are able to ‘register’, in which case you can probably create the link yourself from within your profile.

And of course, exactly the same works with .gov sites as well, so give it a shot and let me know how you get on by leaving a comment.

What You Should Know About Your Blog Host

Thursday, October 9th, 2008
where did the word blog come from
Chat rooms, instant messengers and electronic mails created for communication and dialogue beyond surfing are the emerging innovations that help man build opportunities for interaction. The need for a personalized and human face aspect of building online communities is slowly changing the technological landscape of the Internet.

Blogs / “weblogs” or blogging are the newest gift of Internet technology to people all over the world. These are updated posts, crop up entries or personalized life snippets, of mundane or bizarre in nature. For most, a “blog” is a personal, unedited, and authentic journal meant to be shared in an online community. Blog site is a place where bloggers can publish anything; his thoughts, feelings, photos, special events, experiences, comments on issues and so on. It is more of an online diary with videos, links, documents, newsletters and opinions on just about any topics you are interested.

Blogs are made to welcome the insights and opinions of all and therefore, should not be written to sound intimidating and too formal. This kind of blog is a sure way to put off the readers. In the basics of blogging, conversational tone would be more appropriate to reach the desired audience.

Blogging is all about individuals reaching out to other individuals. Having a blog has its own set of advantages:

1.Freedom of Expression. If you want people to hear you out and give their own opinion, this is the best way to create a line of communication;

2.Networking is at its best. Having a blog is a good platform for exchanging genuine ideas from consumers to you as marketer of a certain product. Sound opinion and point of view is better than just showing the price quote;

3.Excellent advertising platform. Blogging is a new way to advertise products, a refreshing change from the traditional advertising outlets and it is cost-effective.

4. Gauging public opinion on products and services. The key is nice and catchy titles with new ideas presented in your content. This is an assurance of quick and repeated responses from your readers. Blogs is an excellent spot for the exchange of ideas between the seller and the consumer. Good for measuring public opinion regarding services and products, even political and business matters alike.

5.Useful tool for internal communication. This will help your company to build a knowledge-based community of employees. Also good for harnessing employee relations and identifying human resource issues in advance.

6.Other benefits like search engine optimization (SEO) will help your blogs to be seen often by as many people as you wish. This is very good exposure for your products and services.

Many blog hosting services are available on the Internet. But the basic question is which one of the services will be the best to start off your business blog program? Business people are usually clueless to recent technological innovations which would help them maximize their marketing potentials. For these beginners, it is best to study first the services offered by blog hosts. An ineffective business blogging program may damage marketing opportunities instead of enriching them.

A company may decide to do the following depending on its capacity and needs: 1) Host their own blog service, 2) Pay someone else to host the service, or 3) Setup a “blog aggregator page” and ask the employees to select their blog hosting services individually. There are paid and free services available for individuals.

For business blogs, they are required to have the latest blogging features; if not, this will prevent them from maximizing their marketing, public relations and SEO potentials.

Keep in mind that blogs should have the following basic essentials:

COMMENTS. Welcoming comments provide opportunity for dialogue. In business blogs, they are a good customer feedback mechanism. This helps develop better customer relations based from loyalty and trust. Blogging is an innovative way to converse with your customers.

TRACKBACK. This helps in maximizing company and product exposure. Through this service, consumers can get back to you for more posts and updates without the difficulty of locating you. If your blog is popular in a specific online community chances are links going back to your blog site are everywhere online, other blog sites or even websites.

CATEGORIES AND TAGS. These both help in classifying blog searches for ease of navigation and on site search. Categories act as libraries because it classifies posts by subject matter such as business, distance learning, e-commerce, online auctions, etc. Tags, help in the classification, especially in the blog search engine Technorati. Possible customers and new clients locate blogs about certain topics of interest by just clicking the tags.

RSS FEED. Really Simple Syndication is the feed from your blog that is sent out over the internet, and collected through the various newsreaders and aggregators.

If your company is to establish a business blogging program, considerable options should be made available by the hosting companies shortlisted for the services. Free blog hosting services are popular but they are much appropriate for individual online journals. Paid blog hosting services offer unlimited packages best for your company’s needs. You may want to suggest checking out some blogs that use the host first, read and examine their layout and design. Another important thing to consider is a reliable technical support the host has.

After, choosing the blog host, a team should be ready to plan the design and structure of the blog: The team should:

1. create a style that meets the needs of the audience;

2. establish an open, credible tone;

3. schedule weekly updating of blog – ideally, a few times a week;

4. include weblinks of other website and blogs;

5. blog post should be in the “first person;”

6. focus on the business blog objective; and,

7. maintain an honest, engaging conversational quality.

Remember, whatever the look, style and content found on your blog is a reflection of you and your company.
